A chair that Slovenian architect Jožef Plečnik designed for Czech President Tomaš Masaryk in the 1920s sold for EUR 40,740 at an auction in Prague on Sunday, almost eight times the asking price.

The chair was sold to an anonymous buyer, according to the radio report. The wooden chair in black leather was made by Plečnik between 1923 and 1925, when he worked at Prague Castle on commission from Masaryk.

Plečnik (1872-1957) was commissioned to make Hradčany Castle into the symbolic heart of the new democratic country. His transformation of the castle, between 1921 and 1934, is considered one of his finest pieces of work. Hradčany remains to this day the official residence of the Czech president.
