Minister Žmavc visits Slovenian minorities in Budapest

Minister for Slovenians Abroad Gorazd Žmavc met with representatives of the Slovenian minority in Hungary and of the Hungarian minority in Slovenia on Monday as part of his two-day visit to the Hungarian capital of Budapest.

Žmavc met the representatives to discuss collaboration and set a date for the next session of a mixed committee monitoring the implementation of the agreement protecting the rights of the Slovenian minority in Hungary and of the Hungarian minority in Slovenia.

The meeting is scheduled for the end of 2016 in Budapest.

The minister also attended a reception, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Slovenia's independence, where he gave an address to highlight the significance of both minorities for Slovenia and Hungary, the government's Office for Slovenians Abroad said in a press release.

The minister said the minorities were a cultural, economic and political bridge between both countries. He expressed his thanks to the minorities and expressed hope that the cooperation between Slovenia and Hungary would continue.

Ksenija Škrilec, Slovenia's ambassador to Hungary, also attended the event, highlighting the importance of Slovenia's National Day and the independence anniversary.

She also commended the two countries for their collaboration and friendly relations.

The minister is continuing his visit to Budapest today to meet representatives of city authorities. They will discuss upgrading relations in the Danube region to continue the work of the Conference of the Danube Cities, which had its last meeting in December last year in Serbia's Novi Sad.
