Buenos Aires - Argentina's capital hosted a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Slovenia's independence on National Day, 25 June, which featured more than 100 Slovenian artists. The event was held as part of Slovenian month, which celebrated the historic ties between Slovenia and Argentina.

More than a thousand people flocked on Saturday to the Avenida de Mayo, connecting Argentina's presidential palace and parliament, to attend the celebration.

Festivities began with a morning mass led by Slovenian bishops Andrej Stanovnik and Lojze Urbanič. Later, performances were given by various music and dance groups belonging to the Slovenian community in Argentina.

Slovenian organisations in Argentinia were presented along with Slovenia's tourist destinations. Visitors were also able to buy Slovenian books and taste typical Slovenian cuisine.

The cultural highlight of Saturday's event was a rendition of the Slovenian national anthem by acclaimed Slovenian musicians Janez Dovč and Boštjan Gombač.

Before closing on Monday, the programme of Slovenian month also featured a concert on Sunday of the Sounds of Slovenia, an ensemble interpreting Slovenian folk music in contemporary arrangements.
